Neurotransmitters are chemicals that allow the movement of information from one neuron across the gap between it and the adjacent neuron. Different areas of the brain favor certain neurotransmitters over others. Deficiencies of neurotransmitters can cause changes in behavior or brain function. There is no non-invasive way of testing the levels of neurotransmitters in a person’s brain because of something called the blood brain barrier. The blood brain barrier is a structure that keeps most substances in the blood away from the brain, with the exception of a few metabolically necessary substances such as oxygen and glucose. Therefore the only way to realistically assess neurotransmitter levels is through subjective questionnaires that rate perceived brain function.
